PoE can transmit data through a network cable while supplying power to PoE terminal devices such as wireless AP, network camera, IP phone, PAD, etc., with a transmission distance of up to 100 meters. - Main factors affecting PoE transmission distance
1-1. Network cable quality
The data signal transmission distance of ordinary Category 5 cables is about 100 meters. Considering factors such as channel attenuation in engineering, 80-90 meters is generally taken to ensure construction quality. The transmission distance here refers to the maximum rate, such as 100M. However, if the rate is reduced to 10M, the transmission distance can be extended to 150-250 meters, depending on the quality of the network cable.
The PoE power supply distance is closely related to the material of the network cable. The lower the impedance of the network cable, the longer the transmission distance.
1-2. Cable laying and heat dissipation
The increase in cable temperature will lead to a decrease in channel attenuation and insertion loss performance. When laying PoE cables, the impact of cable laying on heat dissipation should be considered.
Therefore, when laying cables, pay attention to adopting a method that is conducive to heat dissipation.
1-3. PoE switch performance
A robust network not only depends on the PoE power supply distance, but also the network transmission quality must be guaranteed. According to IEEE regulations, if the network cable transmission exceeds 100 meters, the transmission quality may not be guaranteed.
However, in some cases (under cost pressure), such as when installing a camera, the distance may exceed 100 meters. If the distance is not too far, setting the camera connection rate to 10M can extend the PoE transmission distance to 150-250 meters.
In order to achieve a longer transmission distance, the PoE switch has strict requirements on the network cable and its own performance is also critical. If the internal switching chip of the PoE switch has poor self-adaptation ability and the power chip management ability is not strong, even if the transmission rate is forced to be 10M, it cannot guarantee stable transmission of 250 meters, and even 150 meters cannot be achieved.
