How to ensure stable connection of PoE switch?

With the continuous development of PoE technology, PoE switches are currently in a very mature stage, however, due to the current monitoring market under the pressure of cost, the quality of the selected PoE switches or cables is too low, or the scheme design itself is unreasonable, which will result in a particularly heavy workload for the maintenance of PoE power supply projects. The network monitoring project is different from the ordinary network integrated wiring, the data transmission volume is high, the power is high, and it requires uninterrupted work around the clock, so the view that PoE power supply is unstable. But is POE power supply really unstable? Let us introduce how PoE switches can be connected stably and what are the security advantages of PoE switches? Let’s take a look!

How to ensure stable connection of PoE switch?

① Use standard PoE switches. Non-standard PoE switches do not have IEEE802.3af or IEEE802.3at protocols. Regardless of whether the terminal device supports PoE power supply, forcing 48V output power supply will damage the terminal device. Therefore, the use of standard PoE switches for connection is the first step to ensure the stable operation of the network system.

②Use qualified patch cord.Avoid buying non-standard patch cords of unqualified quality. Because they are not produced in strict accordance with the requirements of standard network cables, copper-clad steel/aluminum/iron may occur. Therefore, the resistance of the network cable will be large and it is not suitable for PoE power supply.

③Determine the power consumption of the terminal equipment. Different PoE switches standards have different output powers, such as: IEEE802.3af standard POE switch can supply power to equipment with maximum power consumption not exceeding 15.4W; A PoE switch that conforms to the IEEE802.3at standard can supply power to devices whose maximum power consumption does not exceed 30W. According to the transmission distance and material loss, the maximum power consumption that can be given may be lower.

④Clarify the number of terminal equipment. Under the IEEE802.3af standard, if the total PoE power supply of a 24-port PoE switch reaches 370W, it can supply 24 ports (370/15.4=24),; But if it is calculated according to the IEEE802.3at standard for a single-port maximum power supply of 30W, at the same time, it can only supply power to 12 ports at most (370/30=12).

⑤ Determine the transmission distance.  The power supply distance of the PoE switch is determined by the transmission distance of the data signal. When the transmission rate is 100Mbps, the maximum distance that the data signal can be transmitted is 100m. Therefore, judging the transmission distance based on the transmission rate is one of the factors that ensure the stable connection of the PoE switch.

⑥Has IETF RFC2544 standard. This standard can provide a service interruption benchmark test method to test the throughput of network interconnection equipment, the number of back-to-back frames, packet loss rate and delay performance, and monitor the stable connection of PoE switches.
